Prepare for doctoral work in the fields of strategic management, marketing, operations and technology management, or organisational behaviour. This 9-month, specialist research MPhil is ideal for those intending to continue to a PhD and career in academia.

The MPhil in Strategy, Marketing, Operations and Organisational Behaviour (SMOOB) gives you the foundational knowledge and skills you need to:

- conduct rigorous research in your chosen field of specialisation

- study, interpret and critique research papers

- present your ideas in a public forum

✍ Metodología

Students complete six modules and a dissertation, although they may request to take an additional three modules in place of the dissertation. The modules cover research methodology (e.g. statistics, mathematical modelling, experimental research), foundation courses (e.g. microeconomics, game theory), and research seminars on subjects such as strategy, marketing, innovation, operations and technology management and organisational behaviour.

One to one supervision

- For the dissertation, students will be allocated a supervisor towards the end of the Michaelmas Term. Students will engage with dissertation supervisors over the Lent and Easter Terms. Supervisors will provide general academic advice to students, and subject-specific advice relating to the dissertation. Students and supervisors normally meet about once a month to discuss progress, but meetings may be more or less frequent depending on the project¿s progression.

The University of Cambridge publishes an annual Code of Practice which sets out the University¿s expectations regarding supervision.

Seminars & classes

- Students will attend weekly classes (lectures and seminars) and will also participate in the research seminars of the subject group pertaining to their field of specialisation. Students are normally expected to do pre-reading in order to participate in classes and seminars, contribute to group work, and deliver individual or group presentations where required.

Lectures

- Students will normally attend an average of ten hours of lectures per week, although this will vary depending on the choice of modules.

🏁 Objetivos

The educational aims of the programme are to prepare students for doctoral work in the fields of strategic management, marketing, operations and technology management, or organisational behaviour at CJBS. The programme is an integral part of the CJBS PhD programme for these fields, by:

- providing teaching in research methodology, in particular in econometrics and mathematical modelling

- providing teaching in foundational subjects, such as economics

- providing research seminars in which students will learn about the current debates in their field of specialisation, and about the canonical literature that underpins these debates

- providing guidance on the structuring, writing and critiquing of academic research papers

- giving students the opportunity to experience research first-hand, either through an individual research project or a dissertation.
